5th November 2021
Dear Dr. Abela,
In November 1999 disgraced former EU Commissioner John Dalli falsely and maliciously accused me of sending 20, 000 anonymous letters claiming to defame him. I was acquitted of all the charges he brought against me.
After four years of criminal proceedings against me, in his judgment, Judge Tonio Micallef Trigona confirmed that there was no evidence connecting me to this crime.
It was the 15th November 1999 when I was arrested and held in custody while the police conducted their investigations.
On the 28th July 2021 in an article published in Lovin Malta titled “John Dalli’s 12-Point Right Of Reply To An Analysis Of His Three-Decade Affair With Alleged Corruption", John Dalli confirmed “I am informed that the anonymous letters were printed in a stationery in Mosta and were mailed in envelopes that came from the House of Representatives. I am informed that a Nationalist MP had an accident in Floriana and the police found hundreds of these letters in his car boot”.
The MP John Dalli referred to is Mario Galea. It was the 16th November 1999 at approximately 2.00 am when Mario Galea was involved in the above-mentioned car accident. The accident was serious enough for the police to get involved. It was then that the police had found hundreds of anonymous letters in his car.
On the 16th March, 2000 in Parliament Mario Galea had the audacity to bring the matter up and accuse the Labour Party of being involved in purchasing the stationery for the letters.
Dr. Sant had asked for an investigation into the car accident in Floriana involving Mario Galea. Despite the evidence available, Mario Galea's involvement in the possession and distribution of the anonymous letters was covered up.
I am therefore requesting you to instruct Police Commissioner Angelo Gafa to take the necessary steps and hold Mario Galea accountable for the crime he had committed in relation to these letters.
I take the opportunity to assure you of my full co-operation in this matter.
Yours sincerely,
Joseph Ellul-Grech
